Chapter Meeting
October 21, 2026

There is no chapter meeting on the third week of October. Instead, we’re re-working our usual schedule a bit to accommodate a well-worth-it talk from Cynthia Powell, the Executive Director of Calflora. During this meeting, you will discover how Calflora brings together plant records from many sources to create a more complete picture of California’s wild plants.

Cynthia Powell will demonstrate tools for exploring plant distributions, navigating changing scientific names, understanding soil and climate tolerances, identifying potential habitat, and tracking plant populations over time. Learn how CNPS Chapters, botanists, researchers, and plant enthusiasts can use Calflora to find plants, document rare populations, and better understand California’s changing flora.

Cynthia Powell is Calflora’s Executive Director. She graduated with her Master of Science degree in Geographic Information System, or GIS, in 2010, forecasting Mokelumne River water supply based on MODIS remote sensing snowpack images. She’s been examining what was under that snow — plants — ever since.

At Calflora, Cynthia wears many hats. She oversees programs, research, outreach, and advocacy, as well as fundraising, staff supervision, and project management.

The meeting venue

With sincere gratitude to McConnell Arboretum & Botanical Gardens, Shasta Chapter CNPS continues to meet in the new Turtle Bay Nursery Classroom, 1125 Arboretum Drive, Redding. There is lots of free, paved parking just steps away from the classroom building, and nice, curbed sidewalks. To get to the new venue, from South Market Street, turn east onto Arboretum Drive. Veer right at the first opportunity (so you don’t end up at Turtle Bay Elementary School!), and drive a short way to the “curvy” parking lot to the east of Arboretum Drive.

From South Market Street in Redding (upper left corner), follow the blue arrows to the parking area outside the gates of the new Turtle Bay Nursery Classroom, marked with a blue X (not yet built in this image!). Screenshot from Google Maps.

The Nursery Classroom is just inside a large wrought-iron double gate, which is just north of the entrance to the botanical gardens proper.

The meeting time

We will get the show on the road no later than 6 PM for our short Chapter meeting and announcements, followed by our speaker’s presentation. Or come as early as 5:30 PM to socialize and see what sort of pre-meeting activity or display we might have for you
