With our fearless President taking social distancing to the extreme, in the hinterlands of Oregon and Washington, our Vice is left at home to say what has to be said….

It has been a hot and smoky August, but the Shasta Chapter has been relentlessly moving forward.  Our plant propagators have been out propagating, our fieldtrippers have been out fieldtripping, and our social media team has been posting all the breaking Chapter news.  This edition of our electronic newsletter provides an overview of our recent past activities as well as a peek ahead to some upcoming events that you won’t want to miss.

After having to cancel our Spring Plant Sale, we have noticed a pent-up demand from gardening enthusiasts who are eagerly awaiting our Fall Plant Sale offerings.  To meet that demand, we are offering a virtual plant sale this fall, featuring almost 2000 individuals of over 160 California native species ideal for sustainable native plant gardens.  As discussed in the article by the Propagation Team, our online native plant store will be open on October 18 and 19 to Chapter members only, and from October 20 to 29 to the general public.  So, this is a great time to sign up as a CNPS member, to show your support for the Shasta Chapter, and to get the best selection of our native plants!

Although we are not leading group fieldtrips, our members have been seeking out cool hikes (literally and figuratively) in the high country and along streams, rivers, and lakes.  Check out their field reports under Get Out! for some great destinations for fall hiking.

And on the businessy side, although we haven’t met in person for months, we have a dedicated and active Chapter Board that helps guide our myriad of activities, including conservation, rare plant protection, invasive weed management, grants and scholarships, and much more.  If you’d like to help support our Chapter activities, we urge you to contact us at shastacnps@gmail.com.  In particular, we are in dire need of assistance with our social outreach and need volunteers with great writing and layout abilities to assist with our newsletter website.

In short… get out, get involved, plant natives, and above all, stay safe! -Don Burk, Vice President
