We’ve got two field trips for August, including an all-day visit to our newest national monument. Please join us!

Gray Butte and Panther Meadows Field Trip, Mt. Shasta
Sunday, August 17, 8 AM

  • This will be a 3.5-mile, moderately difficult hike at high altitude, with an elevation gain of 700 feet, and up to five miles for those who want to go farther to Panther Meadows. Because of the elevation gain and altitude, only those who are fit and able to easily walk five miles should participate. Expect beautiful wildflowers and scenic views. Because of the sensitive plants at Panther Meadows, all participants must remain on the trails; side trips are prohibited. We will meet at the Mt. Shasta Mall parking lot near Chase Bank at 8 AM and carpool/caravan to the trailhead. If you live in the Mt. Shasta area, email David Ledger for a meeting place. Bring a hat, sunscreen, plenty of water, lunch, and gas money. No dogs, please. Limited to 15 people. Please email walk leader David Ledger at dsledger49@gmail.com to reserve a space, and be sure that you have signed the waiver above (see opening paragraph).

Sáttítla Highlands National Monument
Sunday, August 24, 8 AM

  • This will be an all-day visit to our newest national monument, Sáttítla Highlands National Monument, at Medicine Lake. It will involve a lot of driving, with short walking field trips at scenic areas, and a side trip to Glass Mountain, an obsidian outcrop. We will do considerable botanizing on the trip as time allows, posting our finds on Calflora. There is water at Medicine Lake, but no stores after McCloud. We will meet in the Mt. Shasta Mall parking lot near Chase Bank at 8 AM and carpool/caravan to Sáttítla. This will be a 12-hour trip, returning to Redding by 8 PM. (If there is enough interest in a longer stay, we could camp overnight on Saturday evening. Please notify David Ledger if you are interested in overnight camping.) Bring a hat, sunscreen, plenty of water, lunch, dinner, and gas money. No dogs, please. Limited to 15 people. Email field trip leader David Ledger at dsledger49@gmail.com to reserve a space, and be sure that you have signed the waiver above (see opening paragraph).
