Horsetown-Clear Creek Preserve Hike
Sunday, December 8, 9:30 AM
- Join Shasta Environmental Alliance member and Horsetown-Clear Creek Preserve board member Lisa Ross for a 3-mile winter hike. We will visit some less-traveled upper-loop trails at the Horsetown-Clear Creek Preserve for views and a look at how plants and wildlife have recovered six years after wildfire. Lisa will explain the restoration work that has been done including planting milkweed for monarch butterflies, as well as other native plants for pollinators and wildlife. This is an easy field trip, but uneven rocky trails require good footwear and balance. No dogs, please; heavy rain cancels. This joint SEA/Shasta Chapter CNPS field trip is limited to 15 people. Meet at the Horsetown-Clear Creek Preserve parking area on Clear Creek Road, just west of the Clear Creek pedestrian bridge. Waivers and sign-up required (see last paragraph, below).
New Year’s Day Field Trip,
Wednesday, January 1, 2025, 9:30 AM
- This is our traditional New Year’s Day hike up Westside Trail to the “Top of the World.” This is a four-mile out-and-back hike with a 600-foot elevation gain through areas burned by the Carr Fire in West Redding. Little will be in bloom, but we will identify the common trees and shrubs as we make our way up the trail. This is not a difficult trail and is suitable for most people that have decent balance and can walk four miles. We usually have 15 to 25 people on this hike and usually have a toast of wine at the top and often one or two people will bring cookies to share. Limited to 25 people. Waivers and sign-up required (see last paragraph, below).
Please sign up for the above field trips on SEA’s Meetup.com page, and make sure you have signed both waivers for 2024 (see opening paragraph). For more information about these field trips, please contact me at david@ecoshasta.org. ~David Ledger
