As the 2023 Shasta Chapter CNPS Scholarship season gears up, we have been in touch with a couple of our more recent award winners. Already they are doing very exciting things in botany!
From Zane Walker, our 2020 Frank Kosko Memorial Scholarship winner:
This most recent term has been great, lots of research! Before beginning this term, I had the ability to present my research on a fossil fern sporeling at the Alaska 2022 Botany conference. In addition to my work in the paleobotany and McCune lichen lab, I have started assisting a lab in the pharmacology department where I assist in collecting and isolating secondary metabolites from lichens.
From Lyra Martin, our second 2020 Shasta Chapter CNPS Scholarship winner:
… the botanical studies are going well! Over the summer I worked for Natural Bridges National Monument surveying hanging gardens for Carex specuicola. Also, I am now a plant sciences major and next quarter I’ll be taking some cool plant classes!
Applications for the $2000 scholarship that Lyra and Zane were awarded are available now, on our Scholarships & Grants website page. Make sure your budding botanist who is headed for a four-year university program in plant biology next year applies! The deadline is May 5, 2023.
Shasta Chapter CNPS also funds one of Northern California Botanists’ (NCB) $1000 research scholarships, designed to support basic undergraduate and graduate research in botany and plant ecology. Eligibility criteria and application forms can also be found on our Scholarships & Grants website page. Deadline for these application is March 15, 2023.
