Kar and Terry Stoker moved to Cottonwood in 2002. They had long visited here and fallen in love with the area. Kar’s interest in water conservation and wildlife rescue (through Shasta Wildlife) led her to plant a garden filled with drought-tolerant, wildlife-supporting plants, most of them California natives. For the first few years, Kar watered each plant deeply, but infrequently. She watered deeply once every three weeks for ten years. This technique forced the development of deep roots. Then, she was able to stop watering altogether. Her garden is the source for several of the California native plants propagated by Shasta Chapter CNPS. -Susan Libonati-Barnes
