Shasta Environmental Alliance (SEA), along with co-sponsors Wintu Audubon Society, Shasta Group of Sierra Club, Shasta Chapter CNPS, and North State Climate Action, held a successful Redding City Council Candidates’ Forum 2022 on Monday, October 3, at the First United Methodist Church in Redding. About 100 people attended this forum, most of whom are sympathetic to our local environmental causes.
The candidates knew that the questions would involve environmental issues, which ranged from support for a new tree ordinance that actually preserves our native oaks or requires mitigation if they are removed, to identifying one action the candidates would take to reduce the effects of climate change in Redding. Some of the candidates did not directly answer the questions asked, but you could get an idea of where each candidate stood on the issues. Nine of the ten candidates participated; only Jack Munns did not participate.
Several candidates said they were impressed by the turnout for the forum, as well as by how involved many environmentalists are in the issues that come before the City Council, in particularly issues regarding Turtle Bay. This forum did a great job in impressing upon the future leaders of Redding just how important environmental issues are to the citizens of this city.
Susan Wilson, previous President of the League of Women Voters, did an excellent job as moderator, and Mike Flanagan videotaped the forum and posted it on YouTube at: https://youtu.be/N3S1yxWTlu4. The video runs to ~97 minutes; the question on the tree ordinance starts at about 36 minutes.
