Pacific trillium. D. Burk.
Like everything else this spring, the Pacific trillium, Trillium ovatum ssp. ovatum, was blooming its head off on the Lynn Vietor Nature Trail, Lynn Vietor Nature Preserve, Humboldt County. Photo taken by Don Burk on April 27, 2023.

On a recent work trip over to the coast, we heard that the trilliums were going bananas on the Lynn Vietor Nature Trail, just south of Arcata. So of course we had to go see! And indeed, there were hundreds of these beauties, blooming in shades from pure white to dark purple, all along this sweet little nature trail.

The Lynn Vietor Nature Trail is a ~0.5-mile loop trail within the 14.4-acre Lynn Vietor Nature Preserve, managed by the Humboldt Area Foundation. The entire trail is in redwood forest—partly old-growth forest, partly second-growth forest—and is mostly flat and relatively easy, despite the short incline up from the trailhead. You can find the trailhead at the far end of the parking lot of the Humboldt Area Foundation headquarters, at 363 Indianola Road, in Bayside, not at all far from Highway 101. We highly recommend it!

Coltsfoot along paved driveway. D. Burk.
The Lynn Vietor Nature Trail crosses a paved driveway to some of the Foundation’s buildings and parking lot, along which native and horticultural species are intermixed. The predominant native species in this photo is coltsfoot, Petasites frigidas var. palmatus; the purple flowers are horticultural plants. This driveway is open to the public as well. Trilliums may have been the highlight on our hike, but there were many, many more species in bloom as well. Here is a short slideshow of just a few of the things we marveled at. All photos by Don Burk. Enjoy! -Laurie & Don Burk
