The COVID pandemic has taken its toll on the Shasta Chapter. Some of our volunteers have moved on, and we have not had in-person recruitment opportunities, so more work has been added to our diminishing volunteer base. We need additional volunteers to continue our native plant work. We don’t necessarily need a large commitment to CNPS, but we do need a commitment. This could be for a single task or for an on-going role.  Here are some areas where you can get involved now:

  • June picnic organization:  We need to identify a location and make arrangements for this potluck social event where we will meet our scholarship recipients and their families.
  • IT support:  We need a tech person for minor website maintenance and general troubleshooting – this shouldn’t take more than an hour or two per month on average.
  • Plant propagation: Our needs change seasonally, but there is always something to be done, whether it is seed collection, weeding, babysitting plants through the hot summer, or prepping for the next event. Email shastacnps@gmail.com and we will put you on our contact list for plant propagation support.
  • Chapter meetings:  We are sorry to report that our tentatively scheduled speaker for May had to cancel.  We also had to cancel our March meeting due to lack of an organizer.  If we are to have meetings in September, October, and/or November, we need someone to arrange our meeting location and reach out to potential speakers.
  • Secretary:  This is a relatively easy job.  Mostly, we need someone to take notes during our Chapter Board meeting.
  • Treasurer:  This will take a larger time commitment, a head for numbers, and attention to details… but we will provide training!
  • Field trip leaders:  You don’t need to be a botanist!  Just pick a location and serve as coordinator for the event.
  • Get Out! bloggers:  If you are out on our local or not-so-local trails, we’d love to hear about your experience.  We just need a short article on where you went and what’s blooming now—and photos, of course!  We will help with plant ID.

Please email us at shastacnps@gmail.com if you can help with any of the above or would like more information. Even if you don’t have the time right now, but would like to help out in the future, let us know—we’ll keep you in mind for other volunteer opportunities. ~Don Burk, President
