Jenny Creek Open Space Field Trip
Saturday, May 2, 9 AM

The Shasta Group of Sierra Club, with support from Shasta Chapter CNPS, will be leading a field trip in Jenny Creek Open Space with Friends of Jenny Creek, who are fighting to protect this area from a paved trail of up to 16 feet wide, lit at night, near a stream that has salmon and steelhead trout. This will be a short, easy walk of under 2 miles in a largely unexplored area of Redding. The ground will be very uneven during the second part of the walk, so good balance is required. This is your chance to learn about the issues involved regarding this proposed, but not yet approved, trail.  Meet at TR Woods Memorial Park, 955 Royal Oaks Drive, Redding, at 9 AM. Heavy rain cancels, but for intermittent sprinkles or drizzle, bring an umbrella. Dogs on leash OK if you clean up after them.

As a bonus, the Friends of Jenny Creek will provide refreshments and socializing afterwards back at the TR Woods Park in the Sunset neighborhood on Royal Oaks Drive.  Please RSVP to them at FriendsofJennyCreek@gmail.com or 530-246-0550 so they can plan for refreshments. This field trip will require participants to sign a Sierra Club waiver.

Shingletown to Manton Field Trip
A driving and walking field trip
Sunday, May 3, 8 AM

Shasta Chapter CNPS and Shasta Group of Sierra Club will be co-leading a plant species identification field trip between Black Butte Road and Manton. We will stop to identify plants in several areas and post them to Calflora to increase awareness of plants in these areas. We will provide training on learning how to post on Calflora ahead of the field trip. Stops will include an out-and-back hike on flat ground of about 2 miles to a grove of McNab cypress, plus a walk on several parcels in the Manton area. On the drive back, we will stop at Nora Lake and Grace Lake. All levels of plant ID expertise, from beginner to pro, welcome! Bring water, lunch, hat, cell phone, and a notebook. No dogs, please. Heavy rain cancels, but for intermittent sprinkles or drizzle, bring an umbrella. If it is unseasonably hot, we will change the location to a higher elevation. Limited to 15 people. To reserve a space, contact walk leader David Ledger at dsledger49@gmail.com, and please sign the waiver (above, in the opening paragraph) before the hike.

Castle Crags State Park Field Trip
Indian Creek Nature Loop Trail and Flume Trail
Saturday, May 9, 8 AM

This field trip replaces the one scheduled for April 11 that had to be cancelled. It will start at the Indian Creek Nature Loop Trail near the Castle Crags State Park entrance to “warm up” our knowledge of plants in the conifer zone. We will then drive to the start of the Flume Trail for a 3.5-mile moderately difficult, out-and-back hike with an elevation gain of 700 feet. We will see a variety of native plants on this trail. Meet at the Mt. Shasta Mall parking lot near Chase Bank at 8 AM. Bring water, lunch, hiking boots, and gas money/park entrance fees to share costs. (Redding Library card holders can get a free California State Parks pass from the library that is good for two weeks!) No dogs allowed on Park trails. Heavy rain cancels, but for intermittent sprinkles or drizzle, bring an umbrella. Limited to 15 people. To reserve a space, contact walk leader David Ledger at dsledger49@gmail.com, and please sign the waiver (above, in the opening paragraph) before the hike (we will also have waiver forms at the start of the hike).

Clikapudi Trail Field Trip
Saturday, May 16, 8 AM

This trail along the Pit River Arm of Shasta Lake has a very high diversity of plants to observe, from rare to common. Clikapudi Trail is a loop trail of ~7.5 miles, considered moderate to difficult primarily due to its length. We will provide a plant list and identify plants on the walk led by David Ledger. Bring plenty of water, lunch, hat, and wear closed-toe shoes. No dogs, please. Heavy rain cancels, but for intermittent sprinkles or drizzle, bring an umbrella. Limited to 15 participants. For more information and to reserve a space, email dsledger49@gmail.com. All participants must sign the CNPS 2026 waiver here: WaiverSign.
