Upcoming Native Plant Propagation Sessions
Shasta Chapter CNPS members & friends~
Please join us for our Sunday native plant propagation sessions! These will be held at the Shasta College horticulture greenhouses, which are on the farm in the northeast corner of campus.
- February 8, from 10 AM to noon
- February 22, from 1 to 3 PM
- March 8, from 10 AM to noon
- March 22, from 1 to 3 PM
In February, we will be starting cuttings from native sage species, and potting rooted cuttings that we started months ago. Practice how to make cuttings that will form roots and gently pot up our successfully rooted cuttings from the fall. Come dressed in layers! Our worktable warms up quickly when the sun is out but can be chilly in the morning. Bring your favorite clippers, or we have a few to share. We hope to see you there!

Volunteer Appreciation!
It was wonderful to have such a lively group at our January 11 propagation session. Several people also responded to my mid-January announcement for an afternoon session on the 25th. Kudos and much gratitude go to Alison Calkins, Steven Clinton, Melissa Harbert, Mike Koterba, Susan Libonatti-Barnes, Shirley Martin, Jana Peters, Barbara Phillips, Ren Redlich, Brigitte Robertson, Kristine Shanley, and Cheryle Yednak.
For the rest of the first quarter of 2026, through March, there will be two Sunday propagation sessions each month: a morning session on the second Sunday of the month, and an afternoon session on the fourth Sunday of the month. (See dates at the top of this page!)

Just in…
Leimone Waite, head of the Horticulture Department at Shasta College, is very generously granting our nursery several hours of student work time per week for the spring semester. It’s always wonderful to bring new native plant enthusiasts into the fold! Shasta College students inspire me, and I hope Shasta Chapter CNPS will inspire them to spread enthusiasm for native plants.
It’s fantastic to have regular participation from a Shasta College student with an interest in native plants! And volunteers of all ages are so essential! Our nursery is a community project that becomes sustainable with occasional help from a full cast of gardeners who have affiliations with many local orgs, such as Master Gardeners, Shasta Lake Garden Project, Shingletown Garden Club, Horsetown-Clear Creek Preserve, Shasta Birding Society, and even more! I am so grateful to the gardening community that is inspired by growing diverse native plants and getting to know them in more ways than are ever mentioned in a field guide or a key to the California flora.
Announcing!
Our new Group for nursery volunteers on Facebook and Instagram is live! It is called Naturescapers—check it out! Invitations will go out to everyone who has volunteered in the last year for whom I have an email address. (If you have volunteered over that past year but don’t receive an invitation soon, please write to shastacnps@gmail.com to let us know.) This new members-only space will be used to post seasonal plant profiles and info about native propagation, and to coordinate for nursery events. Members can comment, ask questions, and find the latest nursery updates. ~MaryAnn McCrary, Nursery Manager
