New Year’s Day Field Trip
Westside Trail, Redding
Thursday, January 1, 2026, 9 AM

  • Join the Shasta Chapter CNPS on our traditional New Year’s Day field trip on the Westside Trail to the “Top of the World!” If it is a clear day, we will have views of Mt. Lassen, Mt. Shasta, the Trinity Alps and the Sacramento Valley. This has been an annual event for Shasta Chapter CNPS since about 2010, this year co-sponsored by the Shasta Group of Sierra Club. This easy to moderately difficult hike is a little under four miles, with a 650-foot elevation gain, through the hills of west Redding. The trail passes through the Carr Fire burn where the shrubs and trees are recovering nicely. Only the manzanita and coyote brush will be in  bloom, but the toyon are loaded with red “berries” (actually pomes). Rain cancels; for drizzle or light rain, bring an umbrella. Dogs on leash okay if you clean up after them. Meet at 9 AM at the end of Kilkee Drive, Redding. Limited to 25. To reserve a space, email dsledger49@gmail.com and be sure to sign the 2026 liability waiver (please see opening paragraph, above).

Cloverdale Loop Trail, Igo
Sunday, January 4, 10 to 11:30 AM

  • Let’s start the new year off right by getting out on the trails to connect to nature and to one another. Join Shasta Environmental Alliance, with support from Shasta Chapter CNPS, on an early winter hike along the Cloverdale Loop Trail in BLM’s Clear Creek Greenway trail system. This trail is considered easy for most, but there are some short, steep sections with uneven footing, so prepare accordingly. The loop is 1.73 miles and features a short jaunt to a vista point where we can pause to take in the view and, if we feel compelled to do so, share some environmental intentions we have for the coming year. Please come prepared with water, sun or rain protection, sturdy footwear, hiking poles, snack, and anything else you like to use to observe nature (e.g., binoculars, hand lens, etc.). Severe weather cancels. Please fill out this form to sign our waiver and be added to the contact list for updates. For any questions, email juliet@ecoshasta.org.

10 Bridges & Salt Creek Field Trip
Saturday, January 24, 9 AM

  • Join the Shasta Group of Sierra Club and Shasta Chapter CNPS on this native plant ID and bird-watching field trip on 10 Bridges Trail and up Salt Creek Trail for an easy 3½-mile hike, with an elevation gain under 300 feet. As we traverse this botanically diverse riparian area, our goal for beginning nature lovers is that they learn at least 10 new plants and birds. Meet at the 10 Bridges Trailhead on Sunflower Drive, Redding, at 9 AM. Rain cancels; for intermittent, light rain, bring an umbrella. No dogs on this field trip, please. Field trip waiver sign-in required (please see opening paragraph, above). Email walk leader David Ledger at dsledger49@gmail.com if you plan to go.
