Hello fall… and new beginnings! With the beginning of a new semester at Shasta College, where our plants live, comes the beginning of a new internship: welcome Oceanna Boudway!

New intern in the nursery (Oceanna Boudway). MA McCrary.
Our newest intern, Oceanna Boudway, encountering seed cleaning in the nursery on day 1 of her internship. Oceanna is here just in time to help us over the finish line for the Fall 2025 Native Plant Sale, on October 3 & 4. We hope you are looking forward to the planting season as much as we are. Did you know that, since we began having Shasta College students as interns in the summer of 2024, the nursery propagates all new plant stock from seed, cuttings, or divisions that we do right here in-house?This means that most of our plant stock is naturally from our region, so you can count on these species’ suitability for our climate and wildlife.  You can volunteer at any season and we will be propagating plants by one means or another.   Even summer is an important time of year for propagation.   Volunteer by writing to shastacnps@gmail.com and learn how!

Common madia, Madia elegans, seeds are just a few millimeters long—250 seeds fit in a quarter teaspoon! We will offer common madia seed packets at the Fall 2025 Native Plant Sale!

As a volunteer myself, I am very grateful for your help.  Sincere thanks to our summer volunteers and intern for not only bringing the nursery to summer’s end in good shape, but also for diversifying it by adding 15 species along the way.   Best wishes to our recent intern, Azren Carter, who is continuing her studies in restoration ecology at Cal Poly Humboldt this semester; and many thanks to some very valuable volunteers in August who showed up between semesters: Stephanie Hughes, Lisa Ross, and Ray Pfister. We all can make a good team for native plants.  Come join us! There is nothing like outdoor and in-person activities for good cheer!  ~MaryAnn McCrary, Nursery Manager
