President’s Message, November 2021

Moth on brickellia. S. Libonati-Barnes.
My California brickellbush, Brickellia californica, is fragrant at dusk, and attracts various small moths. I had so much fun sitting in the dimming light, stalking tiny moths to photograph! This moth is more or less wishbone-shaped. I am so pleased that my native garden is supporting native insects. Photos taken with cellphone and flashlight on September 25, 2021, by Susan Libonati-Barnes.

Dear Members:
I am laughing because, on September 18, I took a photo of the only raindrop I had seen at my Cottonwood place in 2021. On October 25, I had to empty 5 inches of rainwater out of every container outside. I must say that the cedars and toyon look refreshed, as well as all the sages.

Shasta Chapter CNPS Fall 2021 Plant Sale has been a huge success so far! We sold plants online as well as in person. At Shasta College, a small group of hardy volunteers worked in a three-day rainstorm, not only packing online orders, but also helping in-person shoppers, new members, and even some enthusiasts from the Sacramento area.  Even with our record-making sale, we still have plants left, so look out for an end-of-season sale later in November!

I want to thank everyone who helped with the fall sale, our Board members, and everyone who loves California native plants, in the nursery, in the garden, or in the wild.
-Susan Libonati-Barnes, President
