On a recent work trip over to the coast, we heard that the trilliums were going bananas on the Lynn Vietor Nature Trail, just south of Arcata. So of course we had to go see! And indeed, there were hundreds of these beauties, blooming in shades from pure white to dark purple, all along this sweet little nature trail.
The Lynn Vietor Nature Trail is a ~0.5-mile loop trail within the 14.4-acre Lynn Vietor Nature Preserve, managed by the Humboldt Area Foundation. The entire trail is in redwood forest—partly old-growth forest, partly second-growth forest—and is mostly flat and relatively easy, despite the short incline up from the trailhead. You can find the trailhead at the far end of the parking lot of the Humboldt Area Foundation headquarters, at 363 Indianola Road, in Bayside, not at all far from Highway 101. We highly recommend it!
Trilliums may have been the highlight on our hike, but there were many, many more species in bloom as well. Here is a short slideshow of just a few of the things we marveled at. All photos by Don Burk. Enjoy! -Laurie & Don Burk
