Formerly known as the Riverland Open Space Area, the newly named Kum Bay Xerel Open Space Area now features a paved and landscaped parking area, as well as a now-paved walking path that mostly parallels the Sacramento River.

Measuring roughly 1.5 out-and-back miles, the level path guides one beneath massive oaks and huge black walnut trees.  Along the way, benches invite the walker to sit and rest while admiring the river and its ever-present waterfowl.

Find Kum Bay Xerel (translation: Shady Oak Village) by taking the Knighton Road Exit 673 off of I-5.  Then look for Riverland Drive on the west side of the freeway and drive south for 0.5 miles until you arrive at the geodesic sculpture and its adjacent parking lot.  The trail begins at the south end of the parking area.

The following photos were taken while I explored the trail at the end of the month of May. Enjoy! ~Chris Harvey
