Redding vernal pools field trip
Sunday, May 4, 1:30 PM

  • Shasta Chapter CNPS will lead a field trip to see some vernal pools inside Redding city limits. It will be a walk of about 90 minutes on level but uneven ground. Walk leader David Ledger will discuss the history, geological features, and the flora of this wetland area, which is now covered with many flowers. A list of the common plants will be provided. Limited to 15 participants. No dogs, please. To reserve your space, email dsledger49@gmail.com and you will receive the meet-up location. Be sure to sign the waiver, above (see opening paragraph).

Hirz Bay Trail field trip
Saturday, May 10, 8 AM

  • This 4-mile field trip will be on an easy to moderately difficult, seldom-used trail near the shoreline of Shasta Lake. This beautiful trail has one long section with a bank covered with Shasta maidenhair fern, and the rest of the trail has a high diversity of plants and is a great place to learn many new plants. On a recent scouting hike, Don Burk discovered a rare monkey flower, Shasta limestone monkeyflower (Erythranthe taylorii), on (appropriately!) a limestone outcrop. A plant list will be provided. We will meet in the Mt. Shasta Mall parking lot near Chase Bank at 8 AM and carpool/caravan to the trailhead. Bring water, lunch, hat, and insect spray. Limited to 15 participants. Dogs on least OK if you pick up after them. To reserve a space, please email dsledger49@gmail.com and be sure to sign the waiver, above (see opening paragraph).

McCloud River Falls field trip
Sunday, May 18, 8 AM

  • This field trip to the beautiful McCloud River Falls is one the Chapter hasn’t offered for about 10 years. The hike is an easy to moderate out-and-back 4-mile hike that follows the McCloud River past three beautiful waterfalls. This trail is at 3,500 feet in elevation and has a variety of riparian plants and beautiful wildflowers. It’s a very popular trail and fun to walk—most of the trail is easy, with one steep uphill section to the Upper Falls. Bring water, lunch, hat, and insect spray. Limited to 15 participants. No dogs, please. We will meet in the Mt. Shasta Mall parking lot near Chase Bank at 8 AM. To reserve a space, please email dsledger49@gmail.com and be sure to sign the waiver, above (see opening paragraph).

Sulphur Creek Cleanup
Saturday, May 24, 8:30 AM

  • Shasta Chapter CNPS is organizing a cleanup on a section of Sulphur Creek in Redding that will last 2 to 3 hours. If it is exceptionally hot, we will quit by 10:30 AM.  This is part of an ongoing annual cleanup of the creek. We will not be cleaning up any homeless campsites, just scattered trash in and near the streambed of the creek. The cleanup area is on uneven ground, without established trails. Do your part to clean up this trash before it reaches the ocean! Bring a hat, water, and gloves. No dogs, please. For more information and meeting place, contact David Ledger at dsledger49@gmail.com and be sure to sign the waiver, above (see opening paragraph).
