We’ve got three exciting field trips lined up in Lassen Volcanic National Park for July. Please join us!

Paradise Meadows Field Trip
Saturday, July 12, 8 AM

  • This will be a two-for-one outing. First we will hike the trail to Paradise Meadows, which is mostly shaded, but it is a steep climb. The meadows should be in peak bloom, so we expect to see many wildflowers on this field trip. Then we will walk a half mile into an area where a high-severity wildfire burned almost every lodgepole pine. We will observe the slow recovery of this area. This will be a great hike on which to learn your conifers! Plant lists will be given to participants. The total for both walks will be 4 miles. Meet in the Mt. Shasta Mall parking lot near Chase Bank at 8 AM to carpool/caravan to the trailhead, or meet us in the Park’s Loomis Museum parking lot at 9 AM. Bring water, lunch, hat, and insect spray. Dog are not permitted in the Park. Limited to 15 participants. To reserve a space, email dsledger49@gmail.com and sign the waiver above (see opening paragraph).

Boiling Lake, Crumbaugh Lake, and Kings Creek Picnic Area
Saturday, July 19, 8 AM

  • This will be a two-part field trip, focused on learning and enjoying the many wildflowers and plants of Lassen Volcanic National Park that we will see. The first part will be a walk along Kings Creek in the picnic area, plus a short distance to Highway 89 and back, totaling less than 1 mile. We will also hike through an area of burned trees, noting which species and size trees were most likely to survive. Then, we will walk to Cold Boiling Lake, and on to Crumbaugh Lake, where the shoreline will be covered with wildflowers. This is a 2½-mile walk. This will be another great hike on which to learn your conifers! Plant lists will be given to participants. The entire field trip is easy and suitable for all hiking levels. At 8,000 feet, it should be pleasantly cool. You can choose to walk a portion or the entire field trip.

Nature Journaling at Manzanita Lake
Sunday, July 20, 8 AM

  • Join Shasta Environmental Alliance (SEA) hike leader Juliet Malik, and Western Shasta Resource Conservation District’s GrizzlyCorps fellow, Heather Bortolussi, to head up to Manzanita Lake, Lassen Volcanic National Park, to explore nature journaling. This activity is open to everyone, young and old, although children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. No drawing experience is necessary, but it is recommended that you bring your own sketchbook and a pencil. Other art materials will be available to share. Additional activities may include a short walk, sniffing the Jeffrey pines for their delicious vanilla/butterscotch scent, and zine making. Bring a lunch, water, hat, and sunscreen, but most importantly, bring your curiosity!

Please note that there is a Park entrance fee of $30 per vehicle, unless you have an annual pass. We encourage those with passes to carpool with those who don’t to keep this activity accessible for all.

To register for this event and get on SEA’s contact list for updates and further details, please fill out this form, and be sure to also sign the waiver above (see opening paragraph). Please contact juliet@ecoshasta.org should you have questions, or see more information here!
