Please join us for the following field trips, which will be co-hosted by Shasta Chapter CNPS and Shasta Environmental Alliance (SEA).

Heart Lake from Castle Lake Hike
Saturday, June 17, 8 AM

  • This three-mile, moderately difficult hike to Heart Lake from Castle Lake, in Castle Crags Wilderness, has one of the most beautiful views of Mt. Shasta in the area. The climb is fairly steep in parts, with a total of 1,175 feet in elevation gain, but is fairly easy for most people. As long as the snow has melted, we should see a great variety of flowering plants, both on the trail and around the lakes. Bring sturdy hiking shoes, hat, and plenty of water; dogs OK on leash if you pick up after them. We can have lunch in Mt. Shasta, or you can bring your own. (Contingency plan! If the snowpack has not melted, we may go to Cabin Creek Trailhead, outside of McCloud, and hike along the gorgeous Squaw Valley Creek Trail.) Please RSVP so we can keep you updated.

Rancho Breisgau Unit Riparian Restoration Walk & Drive with BLM
Saturday, July 1, 8 AM

  • This field trip, led by BLM ecologist Brooke Thompson, will be more of a driving & walking lecture as Brooke will explain plans to restore 103 acres of riparian habitat on their 426-acre Rancho Breisgau Unit, on the Sacramento River near Battle Creek. Here is an exciting and rare opportunity to see the “before” picture of a long-term restoration project, to hear about all of the issues involved in riparian restoration, and to learn about the sensitive species that will benefit. For more background on this project, please see the article in Shasta Environmental Alliance’s June 2023 Newsletter. Bring sturdy hiking shoes, hat, and plenty of water; dogs OK on leash if you pick up after them. RSVP required for this field trip.
