Important Notice: California Native Plant Society now requires all field trip participants to sign an annual waiver of liability. This can be done online at WaiverSign. Once signed, you will be covered for all Shasta Chapter CNPS events in 2023. Thank you!

Please join us for the following field trips, which will be co-hosted by Shasta Chapter CNPS and Shasta Environmental Alliance (SEA).

Crystal Creek Ditch Trail
Saturday, February 11, 9 AM

  • This field trip will be an easy, level, two-mile out-and-back walk along a historical water ditch that was used for summer irrigation for Camden House and Tower House Hotel orchards.  Built during the gold rush era, it has been rehabilitated by the Park Service.  Prior to the Carr Fire, this was a heavily shaded walk under huge trees with  great plant diversity.  Since the fire, the trees are gone, but much of the plant diversity is still there and, with the increased sunlight, we should see early-blooming wildflowers.  After this easy walk, we will go to a more recent historical water supply system to the Crystal Creek Conservation Camp, built in the 1960s.  This will add about another two, mostly level, miles of walking, with one short steep section.

Westside Trail Complex Walk-and-Talk
Saturday, February 25, 9 AM

  • This will be an easy two- to three-mile walk with BLM ecologists Laura and Brooke, and fire management officer Garrett, who will discuss the area’s recent fire treatments in terms of fuels and ecosystem management.  This is an opportunity to learn from experts in the field; your questions about fire recovery and the plants and animals of the Westside Trail Complex will be answered during this walk-and-talk.

For all field trips, rain will cancel if heavy; bring an umbrella for light rain. Dogs welcome if kept on leash. For more information about either field trip, please contact me at david@ecoshasta.org. ~David Ledger
