We are busy setting up the Shasta Chapter Online Store so that we can have an online Fall Native Plant Sale this year. We really missed our Spring Native Plant Sale, which meant we weren’t able to replenish our Chapter’s funds for scholarships, grants, and donations. But with the help of CNPS State Office and other chapters, we will be able to have a Fall Native Plant Sale.

With the new system, you will be able to browse our inventory online, choose your plants, then order and pay online.  Your order will then be ready for curbside pickup by appointment, which will be made when you check out. We are working on a suitable location for the plant pickup and, wherever it is, we’ll need to maintain social distancing and wear masks. A plant list will be available soon, so you can start planning for your landscaping.

Fairy duster. M. Widdowson.
A new plant for us: fairy duster, Calliandra eriophylla. Seed was planted in mid-February; these delicate-looking shrubs have grown fast! July 27, 2020. Photo by Margaret Widdowson.

Space has been at a premium at our nursery because, with no spring plant sale, there was little space left for all the seedlings and cuttings ready to be transplanted for the fall plant sale. So now our “cup runneth over” with seedlings and cuttings growing up fast. A few of our propagation volunteers have taken on the care of some of our plants, while carefully maintaining CNPS’s nursery Best Management Practices. And we greatly appreciate their “plant fostering” services.

Finally, we really do miss seeing all of our plant propagation volunteers, our enthusiastic plant buyers, and all of our friends in the Chapter! And we’ve been hearing the same sentiment from our plant propagation volunteers, too! -Margaret Widdowson, Propagation Committee Chair
