Shasta Chapter CNPS is delighted to announce that our November 16, 2023, speaker will be none other than Cynthia Powell, Executive Director of Calflora—that extraordinary nonprofit organization whose database has become California botanists’ go-to authority for what native plants (and weeds!) grow where.
The Calflora Database now includes over 3.1 million plant observations for more than 8,500 plants that grow wild in California. Cynthia will give us a basic run-through of what Calflora’s website has to offer, focusing on their Planting Guide and What Grows Here features to help you plan your garden. She will also talk about iNaturalist and other sources of Calflora’s data, how to create illustrated plant lists, and more!
Cynthia graduated with a Master’s Degree in GIS in 2010, forecasting Mokelumne River water supply based on MODIS remote-sensing snowpack images. She’s been examining what is under that snow — plants — ever since. She coordinates all of Calflora’s programs, research, outreach, and advocacy, as well as fundraising and management.
This meeting will be virtual, via Zoom, only. There will be a short Chapter membership meeting prior to Cynthia’s presentation, with time for questions after. Registration is required. (Click here to register. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.) Please contact shastacnps@gmail.com should you have questions. See you there! ~Shasta Chapter CNPS
