It’s August! American Vacation month. The time when we take “last chance” vacations. Many Americans choose to recreate on public lands before heading back to school and work. And right now, some are probably visiting public lands that are on the chopping block to see them one last time before they are permanently altered by resource extraction. The situation is that dire for millions of acres of lands that we the people have previously chosen to protect. What can we do?
Here is a gift from CNPS’ professional staff for all of us who wish we knew how to stand up better for the public lands we love.
Our public lands are indeed threatened by government fiats that are as changeable as political whirlwinds. We can prevail if we take action in numbers that are an accurate reflection of public sentiment. Many Americans want what we want. We want our national heritage of natural places conserved for now and for all future Americans. Nothing is more democratic than that.
Let’s speak up! If we all used this handy guide for even a few of the actions on Flora Magazine’s list, we would form a tidal wave of defense for our public lands.
