Wednesday, January 25, was a cool, sunny day for this fairly easy five-mile hike along South Fork Mountain Road, a closed service road in Whiskeytown National Recreation Area. The road overlooks Whiskeytown Lake, and we had spectacular views of snow-covered Shasta Bally and the surrounding mountains. Luckily, we had the area to ourselves!
We identified many native plants along the way and observed the progress of the area as it recovers from the Carr Fire. There were three flowering plants: deerbrush, paintbrush, and one California pink that usually blooms in summer and into fall.
Except for the first mile, the entire way is a moderate slope and easy for most everyone. ~David Ledger
