Springlike temperatures in the mid-sixties made for a very comfortable hike on South Fork Mountain Lookout Road this past Saturday.  The hike, co-hosted by Shasta Chapter of the California Native Plant Society and Shasta Environmental Alliance, was led by Chris Harvey and David Ledger, respectively.

Eleven of us hiked approximately seven miles over a span of three and a half hours with lots of stops to identify and admire blooms on the way up, followed by a quick descent on the way back to our cars. This ~7-mile dirt road starts on the north side of Highway 299, just east of the Whiskeytown Visitors Center. It is normally gated ~1/3 mile in, which is where we left our cars.

Here’s a slideshow of some of the plants we encountered. All photos by Chris Harvey. Enjoy! ~Chris Harvey
