Shasta Chapter CNPS is delighted to welcome Nickey Watson as our very first Shasta College study-credit program intern! Nickey came to us highly recommended by Horticulture Department’s Leimone Waite. We are very excited to collaborate with the college in this capacity.

Nickey has been involved in Shasta College’s Horticulture program for ~2 years. Born and raised in the North State, Nickey is passionate about growing plants. She even had her own home-based nursery business, but had to close it during the pandemic. At present, she’s completing requirements for certification in horticulture from Shasta College while weighing her options to continue her education in horticulture at CSU, Chico, or at Cal Poly Humboldt.

But for now, Nickey will be working with us throughout the summer, splitting her time between Shasta Chapter CNPS and the Horticulture Department’s nurseries. With us, Nickey will get hands-on experience in applying best management practices, collecting seeds and cuttings, and caring for propagules. She will also learn about native plant issues with respect to ethnobotany, pollination, and gardening for biodiversity. For her efforts and attention to sustaining our plants through the summer, Nickey will receive one credit of study and a $1000 stipend when she successfully completes the course.

Shasta Chapter CNPS is grateful to be participating in this Shasta College program. Not only does it allow us to expand our scholarship program, but it may in fact allow us to return to holding fall plant sales. (No promises, but fingers crossed!) ~MaryAnn McCrary
