Dear Members:
The Cascade Volcanic Arc stretches for more than 700 miles, from north of Vancouver, in British Columbia, to south of Redding, in California. Geologic plates on the floor of the Pacific Ocean are “sliding” beneath the North American plate, causing the volcanic activity that has formed these mountains. Eruptions along the Cascade Volcanic Arc include Mt. Rainier in 1894, Mt. St. Helens in 1980, and Mt. Lassen from 1914 to 1921.

I am personally most familiar with Mt. Rainier, in Washington, and Mt. Lassen, in California. It’s fascinating to compare the two mountains. You can see from the photos (above and below) that Mt Rainier received plenty (more than normal) snowfall in 2022, and that Mt. Lassen in our area received less than normal.

In view of California’s drought conditions, Shasta Chapter CNPS has reluctantly decided to forego the Fall 2022 Plant Sale, and instead put our energies toward a Spring 2023 Plant Sale.

Wishing all of you an interesting fall. As always, get out and enjoy our wonderful environment! ~Susan Libonati-Barnes, President
