As spring descends into summer, the Shasta Chapter goes summer-dormant.  And we are a little ahead of schedule this year!  Although we normally host a June potluck picnic to celebrate our Shasta Chapter Plant Biology Scholarship awardees, we had to cancel the event this year. Not only did no one volunteer to organize the picnic, but we had no scholarship applicants who met our criteria and did not award a scholarship this year.  Nonetheless, we continue to support local students interested in native plants!  As highlighted in Propagating for the Future, we are now sponsoring a Shasta College student intern who will be helping with our plant propagation activities.

With our field trip leader taking a month-long sabbatical in the coastal climes, we currently have no hikes scheduled for June.  However, expect some fantastic high-elevation excursions in July/August!  Looking farther ahead, we may have a new, friendlier meeting room for our fall Chapter meetings, and are tentatively planning for an ethnobotany talk to start off our fall season. We’ll keep you posted.  Until then, stay cool! ~Don Burk, President
