Seven wildflower enthusiasts met at the Brokeoff Mountain Trailhead at Lassen Volcanic National Park on Tuesday morning, July 12, 2022, to begin an all-day plant tour of the Park. Some folks took the plant list to do their own self-guided tour, and the rest accompanied me for the day. Highlights were glorious fields of mule’s-ears, leopard lilies in the stream drainages, elephant’s-heads, white bog orchids, and sparse-flowered bog orchids. A special treat was the rare Lassen paintbrush (Castilleja lassenensis), which several of us had not seen before. A gorgeous day filled with flowers and fun!
I thoroughly enjoyed several days on Mt Lassen, preparing for the Lassen Wildflower Auto Tour, including the tour itself. Several people helped with various aspects of the event: helping with identification, pretripping, and simply appreciating the display of flowers. Thanks to Don & Laurie Burk, John Springer, Paula Crumpton, Kathryn Henderson, Zoe Geil, Rose Leroque, and Greg Lockett, among others. ~Susan Libonati-Barnes
