Seven enthusiastic and motivated gardeners spruced up the historic Matson-Mowder-Howe Celebration Garden on a rare cool morning, starting around 65 °F.  This pleasant morning between heat waves was perfect for getting together and practicing thoughtful gardening.

We mostly pruned the plants that flowered in the winter/spring on old growth, like Arctostaphylos spp. and Ribes viburnifolium.  Our next maintenance session, in the fall/winter, will concentrate on spreading mulch and pruning back the plants that flower roughly May to October on new growth, like Eriogonum spp., most Salvia spp., and Muhlenbergia rigens

The great showing by Shasta Chapter CNPS volunteers was nice to see.  If you’d like to be included on our volunteer list for helping out at this garden, please drop us a line at shastacnps@gmail. com. Thank you to all the volunteers who made this an enjoyable morning! ~Doug Mandel
