New Year’s Day Field Trip,
Wednesday, January 1, 2025, 9:30 AM
- This is our traditional New Year’s Day hike up Westside Trail to the “Top of the World.” This is a four-mile out-and-back hike with a 600-foot elevation gain through areas burned by the Carr Fire in West Redding. Little will be in bloom, but we will identify the common trees and shrubs as we make our way up the trail. This is not a difficult trail and is suitable for most people that have decent balance and can walk four miles. We usually have 15 to 25 people on this hike and usually have a toast of wine at the top and often one or two people will bring cookies to share. Limited to 25 people. Sign up at Meetup.com, and be sure to sign the 2025 CNPS waiver at the top of the page.
Battle Creek Field Trip,
Saturday, January 11, 2025, 9:30 AM
- This outing will be part plant ID and part learning about the important restoration work being done on Battle Creek. First we will head to Coleman Fish Hatchery and then hike up a paved road to the Coleman Hydroelectric Powerhouse and continue up a hill to the Coleman Forebay. Walk leader David Ledger will explain some of the restoration work being done and planned dam removals on Battle Creek, which is extremely important habitat for salmon and steelhead trout. We will identify some of the early blooming plants on the way, as well as trees and shrubs. This will be about a three-mile round-trip hike, mostly on a paved service road. There is a fairly steep hill, but should be easy for those in decent shape. Meet at the California Welcome Center at 1699 Hwy 273 in Anderson (south end of the Factory Outlets) at 9:30 AM. Dogs on leashes are okay if you pick up after them. Heavy rain cancels; for light rain, bring an umbrella. Sign up at Battle Creek Field Trip, January 11, 2025, and be sure to sign the CNPS 2025 waiver at the top of the page.
Waivers and sign-ups are required for all outings. For more information about the above field trips, please contact me at david@ecoshasta.org. ~David Ledger
