Blue Gravel Mine Trail Walk,
Sunday, February 9, 2025, 10 AM to noon

  • Come join SEA board member and naturalist Juliet Malik on an easy and casual walk along the Blue Gravel Mine Trail in West Redding. This trail is accessible to most as it is paved and has gentle slopes, although there is a notable incline on the return trip. The trail meanders along a tributary of Canyon Creek, which hosts abundant native plants and birds. Along with identifying some of these plants and keeping an eye out for some early spring growth, we will explore the environmental history of this stretch of land that once held a city-owned gold mine. If we walk the entire length of the trail and back, it will be 3.5 miles round trip. Dogs on leash are fine as long as you pick up after them. Heavy rain or high winds will cancel. To join this field trip, please sign up on this form, and make sure you have signed Shasta Chapter CNPS’s waiver (see introductory paragraph). Once you’re signed up, the meeting location will be emailed to you. Contact juliet@ecoshasta.org with any questions.

Boulder Creek Area Walk
Sunday, February 16, 1:30 to 3:30 PM

  • We will lead an educational field trip in the Boulder Creek and Churn Creek watersheds in a beautiful natural area within Redding city limits.  Walk leader David Ledger will explain the basics of photosynthesis, carbon sequestration, and water transport in trees from their roots to their topmost leaves. He will also identify native and non-native plants on this easy two-mile walk. No prior science or botany knowledge is required; we’ll use easy to understand terminology. This field trip will be on flat ground and take about two hours. It is limited to 15 people; please sign up using this form, and make sure you have signed Shasta Chapter CNPS’s waiver (see introductory paragraph). Once you’re signed up, the meeting location will be emailed to you. Heavy rain will cancel. Contact david@ecoshasta.org with any questions.

Waivers and sign-ups are required for all outings. For more information about the above field trips, please contact me at david@ecoshasta.org. ~David Ledger
