Please join us for the following field trips, co-hosted by Shasta Chapter CNPS and Shasta Environmental Alliance (SEA).
Jenny Creek Field Trip
Wednesday, November 8, 9:30 AM
- This will be a short, off-trail hike through blue oak woodland in City of Redding Open Space, where a proposed trail may be built, near Jenny Creek. Area residents are opposed to the trail, which is expected to be 12 feet wide, paved, and lighted, although final plans have not yet been made available. We will examine the possible route of the proposed trail; attendees can determine for themselves whether the loss of habitat outweighs the advantages of building a 1-mile trail here that will eventually reach the Sacramento River Trail. This will be a two-mile out-and-back hike on very uneven ground—only those with good balance should go on this hike as it will traverse small ravines on sloping ground. Limited to 14 attendees; must sign a liability waiver. Bring water and wear closed-toe shoes. Rain will cancel if heavy; bring an umbrella for light rain. Dogs welcome if kept on leash. For more information, please contact David at david@ecoshasta.org. To RSVP and receive location details, please go to SEA’s Meetup page.
Clear Creek Greenway Field Trip
Sunday, November 12, 1 PM
- This hike along Clear Creek Greenway Trail will start at the Clear Creek Gorge Overlook parking lot and go for two miles to Horsetown-Clear Creek Preserve, where we will turn around, making for a 4-mile out-and-back hike with little elevation gain. We will walk through riparian, wetland, oak woodland, and mixed gray pine–blue oak habitats. Walk leader David Ledger will identify various native plants and their characteristic features, even after they have lost their leaves. We will observe historical and recent mining activities, noting how plant communities are recovering, and we may also see spawning salmon in the creek. SEA adopted this trail and did a cleanup of about half of it last month. Meet at the Clear Creek Gorge Overlook parking lot, four miles west on Clear Creek Road, Redding, at 1 PM. Bring water and wear closed-toe shoes. Rain will cancel if heavy; bring an umbrella for light rain. Dogs welcome if kept on leash. For more information, please contact David at david@ecoshasta.org
Fall Colors Field TripÂ
Friday morning, November 24, 2023, on a trail not far north of ReddingÂ
- In addition to ogling the gorgeous fall colors, we will note the marked difference in plant diversity between north- and south-facing slopes, as well as between burned and unburned areas. This will be a 3.4-mile hike of moderate difficulty, with ~580 feet of elevation gain. Good balance is required; walking poles are recommended, as are good hiking shoes. Bring snacks or lunch, water, and anything else you may need for this ~2.5-hour hike. Dogs on leash OK. Heavy rain cancels. Limited to 8 participants. Must RSVP to shastacnps@gmail.com for meeting time and location.
